While managing her nonprofit duties, Barnett also worked as the managing attorney for The Hanover Insurance Group in Piscataway, and later as a self-employed legal auditor. Over the years, Barnett has regularly sent checks of varying amounts, some as large as $5,000 and others less than $1,000. The funds, which come from churches, local charitable organizations, friends, and Barnett herself, are used to cover costs such as lunches, teacher salaries, and other necessities to keep the schools operational. The sight of children in ragged clothing begging in the streets, along with the dilapidated housing and ruined businesses, greatly affected her.īarnett currently supports three schools in Haiti through the nonprofit organization Pro Bono Missions, a solo fundraising operation that helps hundreds of children across the island. Barnett was deeply moved by the extreme poverty she witnessed in Port-au-Prince during her first visit in 1976.
